An email from a Fire Fighter instructor looking for advice on creating a fitness maintenance plan and fitness building program for his major city fire fighters prompted an answer that was diverse in its ability yet cost effective. The problem on our job is that the level of fitness varies dramatically from 22 year old probationary fire fighters just out of the military to 60 year old guys that don't exercise and are in terrible condition. Any recommendations? Thanks for your feedback on the Fire Fighter and Safety Diver programs. I agree. The workouts are not helpful for a 60 year old that does not exercise yet still wears a Fire Fighter uniform.

The advice listed in this article will not only apply to the Fire Fighter fitness component, but to everyone looking for the next generation to their fitness journey. Suspension Training maybe an answer to your department's budget, but it may also answer the need of your fire fighters with functional strength and maintenance requirement.
I have been using the TRX as well as took the Suspension Trainer Course recently and honestly felt my abs so much the next day it hurt to laugh.
I compared typical multi-station weight machine that allows for more than twenty different exercises with the TRX and this is what I found:. The diversity of this training system and programming is unique in its development but simple to perform, though you will be challenged as every movement requires balance and core strength. Cons: Leave the app running and you'll drain your phone battery in only a few hours.
I showed a couple videos to friends one evening -- with a full battery -- left the app running in the background all night and had a dead phone by morning. Lesson learned. My biggest complaint with the app is the title screens on the videos are way too long. You have to watch 10 to 15 seconds of title screen before you get to see the exercise itself, which isn't helpful when you're in the middle of your workout.
I've been starting the video in the middle to save time. The model will demonstrate the exercise several times, so it doesn't matter where in the middle you start. Verdict: If you've got the space and the money, this system is worth a look. I've been really happy with the system and the program, but like all other fitness products: if you don't use it, it won't work. One of my New Year's goals more on these later is to run a 5-hour and minute 50K -- which would be a minute PR.
I think the added strength from putting in some quality time with this program will help me get there. I'll keep you posted.
Update: TRX just Jan. Sara Davidson is an ultrarunner and resident women's gear destroyer. However, passing the instructor's training course is a requirement, and holding a Graduate rank does not necessarily make one an instructor. The Graduate syllabus also builds on the Practitioner syllabus by focusing more on developing fighting skills.
The Expert grades cover more advanced military and third-party protection techniques as well as advanced sparring and fighting skills. People who hold these ranks tend to teach in other sectors such as military and law enforcement in addition to civilian. In order to progress to Expert level, one has to demonstrate proficiency in all of the Practitioner and Graduate syllabi and have excellent fighting skills.
Beyond Expert 5 there is the rank of Master. However, this rank is held by only a small number of individuals and reserved only for those who have dedicated a lifetime to Krav Maga and made valuable contributions in teaching and promoting the style.
Although there are some subtle differences, the various organizations teach the same core techniques and principles.
In some organizations sparring is slow and light until the student reaches G2 level. This takes approximately four to six years because rising one level in the Practitioner and Graduate categories takes at minimum half a year of consistent training. It is, however, more common to observe regular trainees grading only once a year from P3 and up.
Once in G2, students also do simulated "real" fighting with protective gear. Some organizations encourage sparring as soon as students start training. They train full contact with minimal gear in both stand-up and ground fighting, using semi-professional MMA rules for safety. Sparring should always be supervised and monitored carefully by a qualified instructor.
Some Krav Maga organizations do not support a competition component, taking the stance that Krav Maga is not a sport. So-called "fighting" sports tend to operate under principles of using safe techniques, doing minimal harm, and consequently wearing down opponents and using other tactics supported by the "rules" of safe competition.
In its role as self-defense and as a hand-to-hand combat system, Krav Maga operates under a completely different set of principles in which techniques may indeed cause significant damage and fights are to be ended as quickly as possible when the conflict cannot be avoided.
Krav Maga organizations that involve competition are usually founded and named specifically to focus on using Krav Maga-based techniques specifically under a set of sporting principles.
