To conclude, I believe that every Malaysian should read this book as it discusses the possibiity of attaining an absolute equality among Malaysians. In many odd ways, the treatise was as good a reflection of the statesman's character itself; infamous, recalcitrant, but quietly prescient. It was swiftly hit with a ban Mahathir's delineation of Malaysia's socioeconomic disparity along strictly racial lines in TMD was certainly not designed to be a crowdpleaser.
It was swiftly hit with a ban for floating ideas too incendiary, one which was never lifted till Mahathir himself came into power in On its validity, TMD has made no attempts to masquerade its dearth of scientific corroboration for its radical ideas; it was, after all, crafted from the crude observations of an "educated, progressive" Malay, who apparently connected seemingly disparate, obscure dots to weave a narrative of why things are the way they are, why people behave the way they do, why the system was wired the way it is, and a powerful rationalisation of why the status quo should remain as such for a long, long time in the context of a Malaysia he was in then.
But, to err is human, and even the man himself admitted in hindsight that a few of his postulations might be marred by an unfortunate, inexorable oversight in how the Malaysia he wrote, one fraught in a recent racialised note: racialised, not racial affray and forced change in premiership, had turned out the way it did in early twenty-first century, not in a way that necessitates a total revamp, but a timely revision to evade decrepitude.
That is why, in this day and age, it is still political heresy to denounce TMD as wholly irrelevant.
Yes, it is convincing only in parts, illuminating in some, downright outrageous in a few. If there ever was a paperback that was scathingly critical of many key political players in one sitting, TMD would take the cake by a resounding mile.
And, the undertaking was made all the more audacious considering that Tunku had half a mind to put Mahathir behind bars for his insolence against the leadership. Still, for some reason, that did not deter the man from peeking underwater to view for himself the undercurrents that governed the mechanics of the waves above, instead of appeasing himself, like a large majority of his peers, with only what he saw on the surface.
Sure, it left him a little fuzzy verbose, too in his deliberations, but he had the massive benefit of a novelty in his worldview that few in Malaysia, at that time, could claim to possess.
