Managing up[ edit ] How to position yourself for managing up[ edit ] There are several ways to go about influencing up and they all regard appealing to your boss. Each of the different guidelines Turk provides serves an important benefit for both sides. Which comes into play when your managers have their own projects to work on in addition to managing subordinates. Considering the challenges that managers face with their projects and working to either assist or stay out of the way when those projects require more attention is a smart tactic. Putting yourself in the position to be recognized as someone who can handle the work they were assigned and assist the manager in their work can be particularly beneficial when advocating for your own projects. Figuring out where the work that you want to accomplish fits into the overall goals for the company is crucial to getting approval on those projects as well.

Difficult and not necessarily time well spent. The important thing is coming to understand what makes your boss tick, and developing an effective working relationship. Ensure you meet regularly with your boss and try to develop a professional relationship based on mutual trust and respect.

Discuss their strengths and how they can be most effectively employed. Offer your own support in doing this, perhaps by taking on other roles yourself, especially those which utilize your strengths. Ensure your boss is familiar with the the concept of strengths-based management.

Point out the value of this approach, both up and down the management hierarchy. You need to start out with what you consider to be the right things to do. I wish I would have read this booklet a bit earlier in my career. Especially if you're in a bigger company this book's articles are very helpful to understand how your managers and the company's leaders operate and think.
