Only Pi survives, cast adrift in a lifeboat with the unlikeliest oftravelling companions: Worn and scared, oscillating between hope and despair, Pi is witness to the playing out of the food chain, quite aware of his new position within it. Life is a story. You can choose your story. And a story with an imaginative overlay is the better story. Yann Martel - Life of Pi. Part 1. Part 2. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families—the Trasks and the Hamiltons—whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Katja Rae pinned post 2 Aug In that terrible place, Lale was given the job of tattooing the prisoners marked for survival—literally scratching numbers into his fellow victims' arms in indelible ink to create what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust.

Expand text… Lale used the infinitesimal freedom of movement that this position awarded him to exchange jewels and money taken from murdered Jews for food to keep others alive. If he had been caught, he would have been killed; many owed him their survival.

There have been many books about the Holocaust—and there will be many more. What makes this one so memorable is Lale Sokolov's incredible zest for life. He understood exactly what was in store for him and his fellow prisoners, and he was determined to survive—not just to survive but to leave the camp with his dignity and integrity intact, to live his life to the full. Terrible though this story is, it is also a story of hope and of courage.

It is also—almost unbelievably—a love story. Waiting in line to be tattooed, terrified and shaking, was a young girl. For Lale—a dandy, a jack-the-lad, a bit of a chancer—it was love at first sight, and he determined not only to survive himself but to ensure that Gita did, too.

His story—their story—will make you weep, but you will also find it uplifting. It shows the very best of humanity in the very worst of circumstances. Like many survivors, Lale and Gita told few people their story after the war.

They eventually made their way to Australia, where they raised a son and had a successful life. But when Gita died, Lale felt he could no longer carry the burden of their past alone.

Sep 24, at 1: A Reader Africa has witnessed massive changes in the last fifty years - from independence through structural adjustment, rule by military juntas in several countries and to a period now where the focus is on how best to prioritize their needs based on resources, national goals and human potential.

There is general agreement that human capital is important in economic growth and development. There is always the need to ensure that resources and human capital are used appropriately to advance development. Gender disparities, whether in treatment, access to resources, resource utilization and the law, may in themselves retard or slow down development. Resources and human potential in all societies include how best to ensure there is no gender disparity and to fully tap the resources inherent in women for personal, social and national development.

Beginning with the women's suffrage movement, there has been the push to encourage gender equality worldwide. The Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in embodies the commitment of the international community to implement policies that will enhance the political, social, economic, educational empowerment of women.

This book highlights the issues affecting women in Eastern and Southern Africa - what role does custom and patriarchy play in gender disparities in education, access to health, problems in the workplace and family relationships? How have women writers in the last twenty years presented the issues of patriarchy, women's rights, globalism and women's holistic development?

What are recent developments that have helped improve the situation for some women? These are some of the issues that are covered in this book. The thesis of this book is that there have been policies and strategies developed that have worked to empower women. Waltraud Ernst Gender in Science and Technology: Interdisciplinary Approaches Gender Studies What role does gender play in scientific research and the development of technologies?

This book provides methodological expertise, research experiences and empirical results in the dynamic field of Science and Technology Studies. The authors, coming from disciplines as computer science, social sciences, or philosophy, discuss how to ask questions about gender and give examples for their application in interdisciplinary research, development and teaching.

D'Lane R. Compton Illuminating How Identities, Stereotypes and Inequalities Matter through Gender Studies This collection highlights and extends contemporary women's and gender studies by presenting theoretical analyses and innovative research conceptualizations, applications and methodologies via a diverse variety of popular-in-the-classroom topics, such as changing masculinities.

Anne Enke Transfeminist Perspectives in and beyond Transgender and Gender Studies If feminist studies and transgender studies are so intimately connected, why are they not more deeply integrated? Offering multidisciplinary models for this assimilation, the vibrant essays in Transfeminist Perspectives in and beyond Transgender and Gender Studies suggest timely and necessary changes for institutions of higher learning.

Responding to the more visible presence of transgender persons as well as gender theories, the contributing essayists focus on how gender is practiced in academia, health care, social services, and even national border patrols. Working from the premise that transgender is both material and cultural, the contributors address such aspects of the university as administration, sports, curriculum, pedagogy, and the appropriate location for transgender studies.

Combining feminist theory, transgender studies, and activism centered on social diversity and justice, these essays examine how institutions as lived contexts shape everyday life.

Debates on a Multi-Faceted Concept in Gender Studies Originally conceived by Kimberle Crenshaw in as a tool for the analysis of the ways in which different forms of social inequality, oppression and discrimination interact and overlap in multidimensional ways, the concept of 'intersectionality' has attracted much attention in international feminist debates over the last decade.

Engaging with the historical roots of intersectionality in the US-based 'race-class-gender' debate, this book also considers the European adoption of this concept in different national contexts, to explore issues such as migration, identity, media coverage of sexual violence against men and transnational livelihoods of high and low skilled migrants.

Thematically arranged around the themes of the transatlantic migration of intersectionality, the development of intersectionality as a theory, men's studies and masculinities, and the body and embodiment, this book draws on empirical case studies as well as theoretical deliberations to investigate the capacity and the sustainability of the concept and shed light on the current state of intersectionality research. Presenting the latest work from a team of leading feminist scholars from the US and Europe, "Framing Intersectionality" will be of interest to all those with interests in gender, women's studies, masculinity, inequalities and feminist thought.

Judith M. The essays collected in this volume speak to interpretative challenges common to all fields of women's and gender history - that is, how best to uncover the experiences of ordinary people from archives formed mainly by and about elite males, and how to combine social histories of lived experiences with cultural histories of gendered discourses and identities.

The collection focuses on Western Europe in the Middle Ages but offers some consideration of medieval Islam and Byzantium, opening these fields for further research.

The Handbook is structured into seven sections: Christian, Jewish, and Muslim thought; law in theory and practice; domestic life and material culture; labour, land, and economy; bodies and sexualities; gender and holiness; and the interplay of continuity and change throughout the medieval period. This Handbook contains material from some of the foremost scholars in this field, and will not only serve as the major reference text in the area of medieval and gender studies, but will also provide the agenda for future new research.

Incurably restive, ambiguous and valiantly struggling toward a new level of maturation. A shedding of Murakami skin. Happily, Tsukuru's unpredictable progression of events is underpinned by one of Murakami's most spare and moving stories. Murakami's dreamlike, illogical sense of reality has always been one of his greatest strengths; focusing his talents on this simple but suggestive tale, he delivers a powerful emotional payoff.

It's worth the read. There are passages of considerable beauty and insight, and moments of magic and a sense of the sublime which we have come to expect from Murakami. His sentences are as unfussy as Finnish furniture.

His plots do not require much joinery. His characters are vividly grained, but often mysteriously so. Yet within a paragraph, Haruki Murakami's novels cast a hypnotic spell. Colorless Tsukuru spins a weave of such vivid images around a great mystery. I sink into his books when I read, enjoying the familiarity and even intimacy with the main character. I don't think I have ever heard loneliness described so honestly and accurately.

If any theme is universal, surely this must be one. Murakami deftly weaves together past and present
