Paperback Verified download. Excellent book! I needed to get a really good understanding of SAS macros and how to apply them in data manipulation steps.

I strongly doubt that a reader who finishes this book would acquire the ability to write a simple code on his own, for example, a code to compute the sum of integers from 1 to under Macro environment.

But still, this is not a very bad book for two reasons: Only one issue It's what I want wanted. Kindle Edition. Art Carpenter is one of the best teachers and lecturers I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. So, it is not surprising that the same abilities that make him a great teacher and lecturer also make him a superb author. Art is an accomplished author and has a writing style that makes you feel that you are in a classroom with a master teacher. For example, in the beginning discussion of what macros are, he writes, "The macro language can serve as our intelligent typist, which generates all or portions of our code for us.

What I find so appealing about this book is that it is completely accessible to a beginning SAS programmer but also useful to someone who has been programming and writing macros for years. He accomplishes this daunting task by dividing the book into logical sections.

The first section, intended for beginners but useful to all levels of programming ability is meant to be read sequentially, developing a basic understanding of macro concepts. Later sections can also be read sequentially but are also useful as references to more experienced SAS programmers. How is this possible?

First, the table of contents with very clear and logical sections, chapter headings and subheadings allows a reader to quickly identify where to find an answer to a specific macro programming question. Art also includes ways to search for keywords or program examples in two appendices. My last comment concerns the word "Complete" in the book title.

This book, based on my limited macro knowledge, is indeed complete. It's hard to imagine that there is a question concerning macros and macro processing that cannot be found in this very complete guide. One person found this helpful. I was disappointed. Coding does not have to be dull. Each section is largely distinct and concepts do not particularly build on each other sequentially.

Why download the book if you can find it online? Part of this is because the book was written in I'm writing in ; but, overall, I was highly disappointed. The book is divided into 3 sections: Macro Basics - This whole section pretty much sucks, luckily it's only 60 pages. Very little of my notes were on higher level discussion of concepts. Using Macros Here the material starts to become useful; but, the writing is poor.

For the most part, each section talks about a single SAS macro. These sections are very formulaic- first giving the syntax, then an extremely simple example, some minor discussion, and a list of "see also" references. I can look all of this stuff up online. Where's the value-added? Advanced Macro Topics Part 3 is a collection of example macros and programs, many of which were not written by Carpenter. This is the real value of the book. Many of the examples can be adapted to a program that you're writing.

However, a discussion on why you might choose to do one thing or another is largely missing.

But I think you'd be better served by using google and stackoverflow. If you want to learn how to write software in SAS, look somewhere else. I first downloadd the first edition and then second one. It gives you the immediate solution to your problem and then you can spend a lot of time investigating the reasons of why your code works or does not work.

I am looking forward the 3rd edition of the book. Art's books keep a SAS programmer from becoming a dinosaur. I bought this book as an investment in my professional skills. AC Mauldin.
